April PAD Prompt Day 4: Type of Person

The Religious Narcissist
Because he has been chosen from among men
to be favored by God
he knows he is infallible.
God speaks directly into his ear,
so do not question when he
contradicts, blasphemes,
adulterates, manipulates Scripture
because he has been chosen from among men
to be favored by God
his choices might destroy families,
pull houses to the ground,
set towns ablaze,
bring his child to her knees–
but he feels no call to answer
the plea in his daughter’s eyes
that beg him to come back down to earth
for just one moment and affirm her
because he has been chosen from among men
to be favored by God.

  1. Wow, our church has lived through this kind of guy,it nearly destroyed us and has left a bitter taste in my mouth. Very chilling and disturbing for me to read.

    • Thank you for the comment and for reading. I am sorry that your church has experienced this. In my case, I was married to him. The poem helped me work through some of the bitterness and anger and move towards forgiveness. I pray that you and your church will also find healing.

  2. Ah. I see you’ve met my Dad.

  3. First thing coming to mind: the Westboro Baptist Church. Urgh. Regardless, I know the type, and the words ring true – such horrors and atrocities man can commit under the guise of belief, of thinking he is chosen by God…man has such capacity to blind himself to all else for the hope of his own greatness.

Potent piece, as true today as in any point of human history. well-written character piece.

  4. hehe…being in the buckle of the bible belt i think i know him…lol

Lots of people abuse their authority, and in the case of religious leaders, it can be even more devastating on a victims psyche since their was an absolute trust and supposed spiritual bond involved. Hard-hitting poem.

  6. Narcissists do tend to come in all forms and shapes — and all ones I run from.

    Lovely writing!

  7. whoa…sadly, I don’t think this surprises me TOO much, Karla. After all, he and a couple of others in our small group for awhile thought they were “special” and the rest of us were just peons! Seriously, it was WAY TOO WEIRD! I’m so sorry you had to go through so much pain.

  8. carry faith, May your life be full of grace.
